From Geno to Darnold: Seahawks Return to Old School Football

The Seattle Seahawks have practically rebuilt their offense in 2025. New play caller, New quarterback, Changes at wide receiver, tight end, and along the offensive line. At first glance, it looks like a complete overhaul but when you connect the dots, the vision becomes clear.

 

A Return to the Old Seahawks Formula

Seahawks are leaning hard into a run-heavy identity. It feels familiar because we’ve seen it before: a tough, physical running game, explosive deep shots off play action, and a defense that smothers opponents. That formula carried the Seahawks to their Super Bowl win in the Marshawn Lynch era, when Russell Wilson picked his moments to strike and the defense froze opposing offenses.

 

Why Sam Darnold Over Geno Smith

This shift also explains the quarterback change. Geno Smith thrives on big plays downfield. He enjoys airing it out. But in a run heavy offense, that style doesn’t always fit. Enter Sam Darnold. He may not be elite, but he’s steady, doesn’t complain about a low volume passing game, and can make the throws when asked. That’s exactly what the Seahawks want from their QB.

 

The Wide Receiver Puzzle

Moving on from DK Metcalf raised eyebrows, but it actually fits the plan. Many people assume Jaxon Smith Njigba stays in the same role as last year, with Cooper Kupp as WR2 and Tory Horton as WR3. But I see it differently. JSN is replacing DK. Nobody from last year’s roster could fill JSN’s role now, and Cooper Kupp essentially steps into Tyler Lockett’s WR3 role. This means WR catch yardage might drop compared to previous years, but that’s okay. Seahawks aren’t relying on a traditional WR2 anymore. Instead, the team will lean on a power run game and involve tight ends and a fullback more heavily in the passing attack. The offense may look different, but it’s actually more versatile and built around Seattle’s strengths.

 

Why It Works

Through the first two weeks, the strategy is working. Darnold is managing the game, the offense is running through the ground attack, and the defense, as expected under a defensive minded head coach, looks top class. This team doesn’t need to chase shootouts. They just need to control the game, punch defenses in the mouth, and let the defense close it out.

 

How Far Can They Go

The Seahawks of 2025 may not have the firepower to win it all, but they absolutely have the pieces to make the playoffs and push toward the NFC Championship. It’s a return to an old school identity, and for Seahawks fans who loved the Marshawn era style of football, it’s a welcome throwback.

2025 시즌, 시혹스 공격진이 완전히 달라졌다. 새로운 공격코치, QB, WR, TE, 라인맨까지 전부 바뀌었다. 다들 그것을 걱정하고 있다, 팬들도 전문가들도 다 시혹스를 중위권으로 보고 있다. 

하지만 나는 그렇게 생각하지 않는다. 예전 슈퍼볼을 땄을 때의 러닝 중심 공격과 강력한 수비에 러닝으로 압박하고, 필요할 때 큰 패스로 한방 터뜨리는 방식을 시도하려는 것이라고 생각한다.

지노는 일단 던지는 걸 좋아한다 그래서 러닝 중심 공격에는 안 맞다. 다놀드는 패스 적어도 불평 안 하고, 필요한 순간 에어볼을 할 수 있다. 딱 팀이 원하는 QB 스타일인 것이다.

DK 떠난 건 놀랍지만 이해한다. JSN은 DK 역할을 대신해서 WR1이다. 대부분 JSN은 작년 그대로의 WR2 역할이고 컵이 DK역할을 해줄까 의심하지만, 컵은 사실상 라켓이 했던 WR3역할이다. WR2는 현재 시혹스에 없다. 대신 러닝+TE+풀백으로 공격을 다양하게 할 것이다. 그래서 좋은 가드, 풀백 그리고 캐치능력이 좋은 TE를 드래프트로 뽑은 것이다. 물론 WR1과 WR3 심지어 TE까지 다 슬롯 리시버형이라 큰 패스는 힘들겠다 하지만 JSN이 WR1으로서 잘해줄 거라 생각한다.

시즌 초 두 경기를 보면 이런 전략으로 올해 운영을 하고 있다. 다놀드는 안정적이고, 러닝 게임 잘 돌아가며, 수비는 여전히 리그 최고급, 그리고 경기를 통제하고, 수비가 마무리하고 있다 (SF전에선 아쉬운 몇 개의 플레이로 졌지만).

현재 시혹스는 슈퍼볼까지는 어렵지만, 플레이오프와 NFC 챔피언십 도전은 충분히 가능한 수준이라고 생각한다. 절대 중위권이 아니며 시즌이 끝나면 탑 10에 들 정도의 수준이라고 생각한다.
